Creativity is just being “Positive”
Me - creative? Yeah right. And pigs fly!
No, pigs don't fly, but yes, you are creative. All humans are. Look into your mind and see how...
Creativity is the fundamental nature of every person. Creativity starts with the imagination, within a person's mind and is driven by the heart.
Creativity is not limited to traditional art forms and ways of thinking; a person does not have to be an Einstein or a Newton to come up with a creative theory or be a Vinci or a Picasso to have a fascinating painting.
A two-year-old creates a wonder of art when he/she is at school getting his/her hands covered in paint, and from the time we are in our mother's womb we are subjected to creativity.
Our parents were creative in making us; we hear various sounds around us as we move in our mother's womb and get to know a person's voice. When we are born we see colors of different shades that influence our creativity from an early age, we hear different sounds and feel different textures on our skin.
As youngsters when we are at home there are our family members who dress us, find different ways to care for us; are creative in the clothing styles that we wear, what food we eat, how to serve it, how to move us around in their daily lives.
As we get older there is learning to crawl and the discovery of a whole new world of mobility. Have you ever noticed the different ways that people walk? Is this genetic, or creative? Probably a bit of both. And this is the same for learning to run, riding a bike etc. All throughout our childhood, through teenage years and into adulthood we are always learning and turning to our creativity to fill in the gaps that cannot be taught or learned.
Creativity is everywhere - and is also in the eye of the beholder. You may have woken up today and made your bed differently; thinking nothing of it, but your partner or even a fly on the wall may think it is a masterful creative effort.
Creativity doesn't have been ultimately constructive either. You may decide to use a different word or phrase to describe things you really appreciate; you may put on odd socks or even have a cup of tea instead of coffee.
Whatever you do, wherever you are, you are always being creative. When people say they are doing "nothing", to do "nothing" takes thought and creativity kicks in. You can do "nothing" by sitting in a lounge chair, lying in bed, watching television or going to a walk. All consist of some type of creative thought content.
There are days when all we feel like doing is to get the alarm clock, throw it across the room and burying your head back under the blankets because we don't want to get up. Then responsibility kicks in and we drag ourselves out of bed. Stumble to the kitchen to put the jug on or raid the refrigerator for a drink. All the while cursing the day for getting us out of our comfortable bed. Hey - that takes creativity! Think of all the energy you burned in the process of the curses you were throwing around in your head.
People sometimes have a tendency to make themselves and others miserable by comparing their abilities to others, which can often be unfair. Sure, competition can sometimes be healthy for making a creative thought come into focus quicker, but on the other hand it can be negative when it results in people's confidence being tough due to careless remarks or self-criticism.
As a child when we learned new ideas or brought home a painting it was often a work of art and proudly stuck onto the fridge or in the lounge room. At the same time another young child would take their painting home and be so proud of what they had made of school, but sadly the painting would be made fun of or thrown into the bin with a comment of "you can do better".
In these kinds of situations, it can be hard to remain creative and to keep a positive attitude towards believing in your own ability to embrace creativity.
Even a small criticism can suppress your creative juices, and though it's always wise to be open to criticism, that is just one person's opinion, of a possible six billion or so. So just like a doctor’s prediction, it can pay to get a second opinion.
As we get older, growing in experience and wisdom, we may try different activities such as pottery, penning a book, drawing pictures of your dreams, kite-surfing, or writing a poem, creating a web page or even setting up a project as our assignments. In the process we may discover we have a skill that had been untouched throughout our life earlier to doing it, often because our creativity had been unresponsive and the distress associated with it was enough to keep us from trying again.
People have a tendency to say, "Oh I'm not creative," and in the process they sell themselves short. It is sad because losing the belief to be creative can lead us missing out on wonderful opportunities in life. People tend to look outwards at another persons achievement and in the comparison often miss out in learning what they are capable of doing themselves.
By looking inside yourself, by thinking you can at least try whatever it is you want; you are being creative. The worse that can happen is you may not like doing it! Lesson learned; move on, no harm done.
Taking up the creativity that is inherent to absolutely everyone and you may just find that life takes on a happier, easier shade. In making that coffee, wearing a new style of dress, buying your groceries somewhere new, going to see a theater, daring yourself to challenge the average, saying something positive to your friends, or even better: smile. That takes courage, but the rewards are positive.
Creativity is not limited to people labeled as gifted artistic types; you only limit yourself by thinking that you are not creative. The imagination starts in the mind and is driven by your heart. So be positive, be creative; because you are!
