Conservative mentality, a term which is now a days frequently used specially for those who forbid people against friendship between opposite sexes or who suggest to wear hijab to the young ladies. On the other hand those who support the first one and oppose the second one are called open minded persons.

The question is from where these definitions come ??

An atheist may think so but what about a believer. For example lets talk about muslim people. If Islam is really a true religion then there are jannah and jahannam after this life. When a muslim person talks against unnecessary communication with opposite sex (excluding close relatives) and talks for wearing hijab, so that along with him other muslim brothers and sisters can enter jannah, he is showing a mentality of openness not conservative reflections. But still being muslims so many people critisize those sort of cautious men. WHY ??

I think most of us though claim ourselves muslim we consider Islam as a fairytale written in The Quran and the Hadiths. We do not consider that Islam is a modern religion and can be applied in every sphere of life, otherwise the definition of conservative persons would have changed.

so its got nothing to do with mingling with opposite sex anD wearing hizab...
infact...i do wear hizab...but dont think so any oen is  gonna call me a conservative...as i knw i m not.

anD i i bliv there is always the presentation style...
if u wanna make sm  one wear borkha...u have to tell them in their lingo otherwise u cannot communicate...
anD if u talk in ur own lingo/the religious lingo with out considering with whomu r talking with anD about wht..
i, personally, wont call u tactless only but also conservative.

ISLAM indeed is the most modern religion (though i disagree with the term religion...its a life style...whtevr.. thts another issue)... anD i hardlt matterz wht ppl think about it.... it will remain all the same...

the attitude u've shown here..is considered as a conservative attitude...not bcuz u r opposing mingling with opposite sex or preaching hezab... but bcuz the way u presented ur words.
bt if u wanna proof tht ISLAM is a modern religion, (here again i personally disagree with the giving-the-proof thingi)... if u have to present it in the modern way...not the way our granddads used to proof...neither the way other dads used...
but our own way ...
similar things goes for every thing tht includes in religios abiding rule anD contradicts with so-called modern society.

Well said Naheen, Not much left to add to that.. conservativeness is about your refusal to avert from your traditional beliefs or refusing to accept or even consider anything other than that.. your practices are your own choice and nobody can call you a conservative for what you practice in your own life.. but when you start pushing others you can be called a conservative fellow.. and mind you its pushing, not inviting.. theres way too many cultures in the world and each has its own conservative beliefs and followers..but to keep an open mind to new things and judging them scientifically before throwing them away is the right approach..

On another note, you ask about the definitions of conservative and open-mindedness and what right do any of us have to call a person either of thse.. absolutely logical question.. let me put another logical question in the pot.. who defines what is "unnecessary communication" between the opposite genders.. who will judge what is necessary for someone else? You??..

i hate peaple when they call modification of the simple terms of islam as modernising ..
