Shamsur Rahman was the opening of an ERA. Till his death, that ERA sustained and glorified itself with contributions from post-modern poets from both Bangladesh and West Bengal.

He has passed away. But the ERA hasn't. It won't.

Unlike all other poets and pretending-poets of our country, he never ran after any materialistic interest; in fact he gained nothing from anywhere except unconditional love of readers. He used to live in a house in Shaymoli that was given by his brother (who used to live abroad). I had the fortune to visit him there several times--and talk in his room totally filled up with books and books.

Such was his personal affection towards me that once (in 1989 as far as I remember) he said in his room : "Tumi shadhinota birodhider potrikaye kobita chhapiyechho!!! ...Ami khub koshto peyechhi..."

The background was: A poem written by me named 'Awntorgoto Shawnglaap' was published in the literary page of the daily Inqilab. He saw it and wasn't happy that I had chosen Inqilab to get it published. [Of course, at that time, Inqilab was a hardcore fundamentalist paper--not the 'pro-14 party Inqilab' of today.]

When he made that comment, I immediately showed him some other poems of mine that were published in progressive newspapers and magazines, and I still remember his smile looking at those..............

Now that he has gone, my heartfelt dowa for the soul of this "apado mostok kobi"--Shamsur Rahman.
