There have been several threads on photography in this forum, but not anything on renowned photographers. So I just thought of giving some idea about a few photographers of our country. But the foremost word of caution would be: the sequence in which I will describe them is not based on their talent or chronology, rather totally upon my personal choice. And I would also try to keep the description short so that no one gets bored. So to know more, plz ask.

Enough intro...let\'s start then. For today, it will be a story of Dr. Shahidul Alam.

Born in 1955 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Shahidul Alam studied and taught chemistry in London where he obtained a PhD from London University. Started photography in 1980. He started working as a commercial and advertising photographer in Dhaka in 1984. Became the president of the Bangladesh Photographic Society in 1989.

He was the founder/initiator of several organizartions, namely: Drik Picture Library, the Bangladesh Photographic Institute, Pathshala -the South Asian Institute of Photography, Chobi Mela -the first festival of photography in Asia and Bangladesh Human Rights Network. Jury member of numerous international photographic competitions, including World Press Photo, where he has been a judge on three occasions. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.

Mr. Alam has lectured and published widely on photography, new media and education. His work has been shown in leading galleries such as the Museums of Modern Art in New York, Oxford and Gunma, the Photographer\'s Gallery in London, the George Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Tehran.

His belief in the power of images to effect change is fundamental to Drik\'s activities. In his own comment: \'you can have your fancy text, but in a country where the majority are textually illiterate, it is images that communicate\'.

He is a great photographer and also a nice human being to inspire one.

Here\'s a few of his works.
