The largest flower in the world

[attachment=978]

The Rafflesia arnoldii.

The flower with the world's largest bloom is the Rafflesia arnoldii. This rare flower is found in the rainforests of Indonesia. It can grow to be 3 feet across and weigh up to 15 pounds! It is a parasitic plant, with no visible leaves, roots, or stem. It attaches itself to a host plant to obtain water and nutrients. When in bloom, the Rafflesia emits a repulsive odor, similar to that of rotting meat. This odor attracts insects that pollinate the plant.

The Amorphophallus titanum

Another enormous flower found in Indonesia is the Amorphophallus titanum, or Titan arum. It is also known as the "corpse flower" for its unpleasant odor. Like the Rafflesia, the Titan emits the smell of rotting flesh to attract pollinators. Technically, the Titan arum is not a single flower. It is a cluster of many tiny flowers, called an inflorescence. The Titan arum has the largest unbranched inflorescence of all flowering plants. The plant can reach heights of 7 to 12 feet and weigh as much as 170 pounds!

Hashna-hena(Hasnuhana):

Common Name: Night Jessamine, Lady of the Night
Scientific Name: Cestrum nocturnum
Family: Solanaceae

Description:In the evening the fragrance becomes almost intoxicating...May be tht's y sometimes it is called "rater Rani"...

[attachment=1091]

This sprawling shrub has glossy, smooth, simple leaves 4"-8" long... Vine-like stems reach up to 12' in its native habitat, but it seldom reaches more than a 4' mound in a single season...It blooms in cycles throughout warm weather...Greenish-creamy white tubular flowers rise from above leaves along the stem, followed by shiny white, fleshy berries...Although the flowers are not showy to the eye, their sweet scent can overpower.

It is a common misconception that this bush is fragrant only at night... It is true that the fragrance is stronger in the evening but one can still smell a light scent all day long....

Dahlia

[attachment=1098] [attachment=1099]

Dahlia is a genus of bushy, summer- and autumn-flowering, tuberous perennials that are originally from Mexico, where they are the national flower.

In 1872 a box of Dahlia roots were sent from Mexico to the Netherlands. Only one plant survived the trip, but produced spectacular red flowers with pointed petals. Nurserymen bred from this plant, which was named Dahlia juarezii with parents of Dahlias discovered earlier and these are the progenitors of all modern Dahlia hybrids. Ever since, plant breeders have been actively breeding Dahlias to produce hundreds of cultivars, usually chosen for their stunning and brightly coloured flowers.
