KRISHNAKALI

In the village they call her the dark girl
but to me she is the flower Krishnakali
On a cloudy day in a field
I saw the dark girl's dark gazelle-eyes.
She had no covering on her head,
her loose hair had fallen on her back.

Dark? However dark she be,
I have seen her dark gazelle-eyes.

Two black cows were lowing,
as it grew dark under the heavy clouds.
So with anxious, hurried steps,
the dark girl came from her hut.
Raising her eyebrows toward the sky,
she listened a moment to the clouds' rumble.

Dark? However dark she be,
I have seen her dark gazelle-eyes.

A gust of the east wind
rippled the rice plants.
I was standing by a ridge,
alone in the field.
Whether or not she looked at me
Is known only to us too.

Dark? However dark she be,
I have seen her dark gazelle-eyes.

This how the Kohl-dark cloud
rises in the north-east in Jaistha;
the soft dark shadow
descends on the Tamal grove in Asharh;
and sudden delight floods the heart
in the night of Sravan.

Dark? However dark she be,
I have seen her dark gazelle-eyes.

To me she is the flower Krishnakali,
whatever she may be called by others.
In a field in Maynapara village
I saw the dark girl's dark gazelle-eyes.
She did not cover her head,
not having the time to feel embarassed.

Dark? However dark she be,
I have seen her dark gazelle-eyes.

The Gift


I want to give you something, my child,
for we are drifting in the stream of the world.
Our lives will be carried apart,
and our love forgotten.
But I am not so foolish as to hope that
I could buy your heart with my gifts.

Young is your life, your path long, and
you drink the love we bring you at one draught
and turn and run away from us.
You have your play and your playmates.
What harm is there if you have no time
or thought for us.


We, indeed, have leisure enough in old age
to count the days that are past,
to cherish in our hearts what our
hands have lost for ever.
The river runs swift with a song,
breaking through all barriers.
But the mountain stays and remembers,
and follows her with his love.
Apart from Tagore’s multidimensional Bangla works, his original English works as well as translated works in English have added to his creative deliberations—which are equally assets for Bangla-speaking people all over the world.

I have been particularly moved by his books CREATIVE UNITY and RELIGION OF MAN which have dealt with massive depth and insight for critical thinkers.


However, in his STRAY BIRDS, he came up with gems of expressions that really would make one’s night sleepless in awe. These are mostly his translations from his original Bangla—which in many cases I felt, are cognitively better expressive than Bangla ones.

Here are just some expressions which have been my favorite:

The leaf becomes flower when it loves.
The flower becomes fruit when it worships.

The tree gazes in love
        at the beautiful shadow
Who is his own and yet
        whom he can never grasp.

One sad voice has its nest among the ruins of the years. It sings to  me in the  night -- ‘I loved you.’

Life has become richer by the love that has been lost.

bt apni jodi particularly mention kora boi dutir kotae bolen taile mone hoe pore dheka uchit...coz linegulo amr o bhalo lagche...definitely i'll look for thm...thnks...
